Construction of the world’s longest road and rail tunnel, the 18 km Fehmarnbelt tunnel, is about to begin and will connect Denmark and Germany. It will be Northern Europe’s largest construction project and the link will be built as an immersed tunnel between Rødbyhavn on Lolland, Denmark and the German island of Fehmarn. In contrast to a bored tunnel, an immersed tunnel is made up of hollow concrete elements, cast on land and assembled section by section to form a tunnel. When built travel time between Denmark will be reduced to 10 minutes by car or 7 minutes by train.
